Here’s a question that so many insured’s do not ask until their vehicle is in the shop for repairs. The answer lies within those numbers that we see on our declaration page of insurance. Unless you are an insurance professional, not many insured’s can list which endorsements are presently applying to their insurance policy.
Your Alberta auto insurance policy automatically provides coverage for loss of use by theft if you have section c subsection 1,3 or 4 under your policy. So basically this means, if you have fire and theft coverage, your insurer will reimburse you for expenses incurred for the rental of a substitute automobile including taxicabs and public means of transportation not exceeding $25 per day and $750 total, and also other limitations apply.
If you are looking for a broader coverage, with fewer limitations, an endorsement called 'Loss of use' is available when you are involved in an accident and are left without your vehicle.
Review your declaration page or ask your insurance provider if you currently have the SEF 20 on your policy. This standard endorsement form provides for the rental of a vehicle, or the use of taxicabs and public transportation. Normally this endorsement will have a specific daily or total dollar limit that will be stated in the policy.
When does this endorsement apply to my policy?
It will be enforced in the event that your vehicle is damaged by an insured loss that your policy covers, and the automobile is in the shop being repaired. It will also take effect if the vehicle is involved in an accident, resulting in a total loss, and are in search of a replacement vehicle.
Can I add this endorsement to my policy if I don't currently have it?
Being that this endorsement also provides the physical damage coverage to the rental vehicle while being driven by the insured person, your policy must also have full physical damage coverage. With this endorsement offered at a reasonable price, it is definitely worth having on your policy.
